It could be both, good but also bad.
How is it good and bad?
Although the virtue of debate is not always apparent, it benefits us in numerous ways and weaves into aspects of our life. Inevitably, you will have different opinions with somebody, and being able to settle and resolve that disagreement can help you understand the other person better, giving an entirely different insight on the subject you disagree about, and it may even help you understand yourself better!
On the contrary, the feeling of encountering disagreements with people around you is not always pleasant, right? It’s tough to persuade people to agree with you…and it’s often accompanied by anger and tears. That is not to mention the numerous incidents of severance or relationships failures as a consequence of differences in opinions. However, I believe there is a perfect solution to the “bad” of disagreements.
That is debate, and debating effectively and convincingly to the listener.
So how does one debate effectively?
For me, debating effectively requires the person to be capable of speaking clearly, coherently, rationally, and with sufficient evidence to support their points, all of which are elements that constitute an intellectual, effectual debate. What are your thoughts?
